WHY AEOLUS?
When I was trying to figure out a name for the business I first looked at other drone company names to be sure I wasn’t copying anyone. I wanted something unusual and being interested in mythology (remember Clash of the Titans?) I decided to look up words for various wind deities.
The Norse god of wind was Odin especially when it pertained to sailors. Now I spent eight years in the Navy so this might have been a good choice but Odin Aerial just didn’t roll off the tongue for me. How about Borrum, the Celtic god of wind? Nah. In Stravic mythology the god of the wind, sky, and air was Stribog. Uhm, too strange for my taste. In Cherokee mythology, Oonawieh Unggi, was the ancient spirit of the wind. Could you remember that when typing in the URL? After a few others, I finally landed on Aeolus.
So, what is up with the name Aeolus? First, it is a three syllable Greek word pronounced “EE" + "uh" + "luhs". Aeolus was the keeper of the winds and king of the island of Aeolia, one of the abrupt rocky Lipara islands close to Sicily. Later classical writers regarded him as a god. According to the myth, Aeolus was visited by Odysseus and his crew in the Odyssey. After their misadventure in Polyphemus' cave, Aeolus gave them hospitality for a month and provided them a west wind to carry them home to Ithaca. Aeolus is also the son of Poseidon. The word eolus means quick moving or nimble. Aeolus Aerial, It's just a cool name!
